| Want to get a crystal clear idea of exactly how far to the left San Francisco has moved? Back at the beginning of this month, we here in California held our Primary Election. As in most California elections, along with the various politicians running for office, a number of propositions were placed on the ballot for the voters to approve or reject. One of these propositions, NO. 56, was among the most dishonest and anti-democratic proposals I’ve ever seen offered for the publics’ consumption. Though billed as a “fiscal responsibility” measure, it was in fact an attempt to reduce the number of legislative votes necessary to raise taxes in California. Whereas a 2/3 majority in the State Legislature is currently required to pass any bill that would raise taxes or allow other appropriations, prop. 56 would have reduced that requirement to a 55% majority. Given that Republicans make up just about a third of the California State Legislature, passage of this proposition would have neatly erased just about any republican opposition to any new tax or fee the democratic majority might have put forward. To their credit, California voters resoundingly tossed this effrontery back in the faces of the Leftists who proposed it. That is, most California voters: take a look at this county-by-county breakdown of how the voting went on Prop. 56. If you look very hard you’ll just be able to make out the tiny green spot representing San Francisco County’s overall “yes” vote on the measure; one tiny, tragic-comically out-of-step voice of approval in a sea of red “no” votes. |
