| Just a few quick thoughts on tonight's debate. Funniest Moment: Al Sharpton’s stumbling, incoherent non-answer to Peter Jenning’s question about Alan Greenspan’s chairmanship of the Federal Reserve. Most Telling Moment: Commentator Michael Medved has persisted, against many charges of taking cheap shots, in referring to General Wesley Clark as Weasley Clark. The contortions Clark had to go through to try and spin away his unambiguously pro-Bush/Blair comments in the Times of London did nothing but vindicate the weasley label and make him look like an unrepentant and embarrassingly inept spinmeister. Most Frightening Moment: The tepid applause and clearly-audible boos and cat calls from the audience as Joe Lieberman defended the war in Iraq. The moment was a bracing reminder of just how unappetizing certain large elements of the democratic base can be. Gentlemanly, humorous, and willing to applaud the right decisions even if Republicans make them, Lieberman simply doesn’t have the self-righteous rudeness it takes to animate so much of the over-vocal left. |
